seen. passengers filming from inside. good morning, everyone. i'm reena ninan. >> i'm richard bay. we begin with reassurance from the president, vowing to overcome the terror threat facing the nation. >> the president addressed the nation last night. declaring the san bernardino attack as an act of terrorism. >> he said the husband and wife shooters went down the path of radicalization. our coverage begins with lana zak in washington. >> reporter: good morning. there were not big surprises in the president's speech. aides say these remarks and their tone were important to president, who worked on the speech throughout the weekend. >> the threat from terrorism is real. but we will overcome it. we'll destroy isil and any other organization that tries to harm us. our success won't depend on
tough talk or abandoning our values. or giving in to fear. >> reporter: in a rare primetime oval office ard, president obama spoke to the american public. >> as commander in chief, i have no greater responsibility than the security of the american people. >> reporter: the president outlined his approach to fight terrorism's new face. >> i think it's time for congress to vote to demonstrate that the american people are united and committed to this fight. >> reporter: he urged legislation that would prevent anyone on the terror watch list from easily buying a gun. and ordered a review of the visa program that allowed the female killer in the san bernardino shooting to get into the united states. on fox, marco rubio said this was more of the same. >> nothing that happened in the speech tonight is going the assuage people's fears. >> reporter: and donald trump tweeted is that all there is?
we need a new president fast. >> even in this political season, let's not forget that freedom is more powerful than fear. >> reporter: and the president addressed muslims directly, enlisting their support in trying to help fight back against rad dalization. and called on all americans to reject discrimination. >> the president relaid three things he wants from lawmakers. congress the make sure no one on the no-fly list is able to buy a gun. congress to have stronger screenering if travelers without visas. and continued military force against isis. can he expect cooperation from congress? >> reporter: if the initial response by republicans is any indicati indication, he'll face an uphill battle. that very legislation about trying to stop the sfat from -- trying to stop terrorists from allowing anybody on the terrorist watch list to purchase
a gun, actually failed in the senate just a few days ago. of those three things, the one most likely to get bipartisan support, is probably tougher screenings for anyone wanting to come to the united states. >> okay, lana zak, live if washington. thank you. san bernardino public health employees are returning to work this morning for the first time since their colleagues were killed. >> several who made it out alive are sharing their stories. the shooter burst into the room from the left. one survivor escaped by jumping through shattered glass. this morning, the widow of nicholas thalasinos says her husband and syed farook were arguing about the holocaust before the incident.
farook's former neighbor and friend is accused of purchasing the murder weapons. >> reporter: the investigation turning to a raid of the family home of enrique marquez. he's farook's one-time friend and neighbor, suspected of sup plying him with the two high-powered rifles used in the massacre. >> did he provide the guns to farook? >> reporter: authorities say there is no information that marquez played any role in the shooting that left 14 people dead. he's reportedly checked himself into a mental health facility. this neighbor says she noticed a change about a year ago. what is the biggest difference? >> his dress. his beard. he was more withdrawn. growing more beard. started wearing his white things. the long drape outfit, whatever sit. >> reporter: this new photo of farook as baby with his family. his sister and brother-in-law
now saying they, too, are angry. angry for not knowing farook and his wife were living a double life. do you feel like you didn't know your brother? >> no, at this time, i feel like he had a double life. i feel like he was very good at concealing everything from all of us. >> reporter: but his father telling an italian newspaper his son was fascinated by isis, hated israel. and shared ideology of isis leader al baghdadi. a robbery at a popular mall brought out a massive police response last night. video captured three masked thieves at the mall in riverside. witness ps say the noise sounded like gunshots. the army of police officers arrived on the scene, putting the mall on lockdown while they searched for the robbers. but they managed to slip away. in london, an aparent lone
wolf terror attack on the the subway. the suspect stabbed two people. witnesses say he shouted this is for syria. cell phone video captured it all. police brought him down with a taser. he's charged with attempted murder. british authorities are investigating the attack as a terrorist incident. several major developments in the chicago police shooting of laquan mcdonald. the justice department is launching an investigation into the patterns and practices of the police department. and mayor rahm emanuel said late last night that the head of the independent police authority has revined. 74 years since the japanese attack on pearl harbor drew the united states into world war ii. flags are being flown at half staff. ceremonies held in hawaii where
